G. Mark Jenkins, MD, FACC

Dr. Jenkins is an internationally recognized Interventional Cardiologist. He is President of The Cardiac and Vascular Interventional Group. He was listed as one of the top physicians in Texas and by Black Enterprise Magazine as one of the top 100 best physicians in the U.S.

His work at the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins Hospital has been heralded as one of the top advancements in the treatment of coronary artery disease. Dr. Jenkins and his laboratory did the entire initial work that led to the development of the Paclitaxel Coated Drug Delivery Stent. The use patent for Paclitaxel’s use on stents for in-stent restenosis is held by his NIH lab. This patent was commercialized by Angiotech and sold to Cook Medical and Boston Scientific. This historic occurrence served as the basis for the development of one of the first drug eluting stents in the United States by Boston Scientific. Additionally, his lab at the National Institutes of Health published the initial papers in JCI & Circulation on the use of Paclitaxel in cell cultures and animal models. Dr. Jenkins was amongst the first experts to give talks in the United States on the use of Paclitaxel to address stent restenosis.

He is a past Advisory Board Member of Boston Scientific Corporation, Bard Corporation (now BD), and Abbott Vascular. He was formerly a board member of the Association of Black Cardiologist, Inc, where he was the longest-serving Board Member. He served, previously, as the Director of the Methodist Dallas Heart and Vascular Clinic. His input is often sought out by various medical device companies in need of his consultation for medical devices in development. He has spoken at the national sales meetings of both Boston Scientific and Abbott Vascular. He has also spoken at the Fritz-Pollard Alliance Foundation Super Bowl event on several occasions to educate the NFL commissioner, team owners, team executives, and athletes on sudden cardiac death.

Dr. Jenkins is a founding committee member of Boston Scientific’s “Close The Gap” national disparity campaign. He is a founding committee member of Bard Corporation’s (now BD) “Love Your Limbs” national Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) awareness campaign.

After graduating valedictorian of his high school, he attended college at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he also graduated with honors. Dr Jenkins continued his education by attending medical school at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  He completed his internship and residency in Internal medicine, and his fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology at the John Hopkins Hospital. He spent 4 years at NIH as a Senior Research Associate in basic vascular biology research.

Dr. Jenkins’s areas of interest include cardiac consultation, performance of coronary intervention including balloon angioplasty, stenting, intravascular ultrasound, laser atherectomy, rotablation and the performance of peripheral interventions including arteriograms, IVUS, balloon angioplasty, stenting laser atherectomy, digital orbital atherectomy and cryoplasty for the treatment of renal arterial disease and peripheral vascular disease involving lower extremities.

Among his many academic achievements, Dr. Jenkins has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in major journals.

In his spare time he enjoys playing the piano and spending time with friends and family. He is also an Eagle Scout.
